Pitching categories tend to be fairly skewed. That’s because teams tend to end up going overboard on pitching where other teams tend to ignore pitching. Injuries affect pitchers more than hitters and a 1.2 inning affair giving up 11 earned runs really hurts a staff where an 0-for-stretch doesn’t hurt an offense as much.

That said, pitching is where you can make up points. You can find adequate starters on a day to day basis on the waiver wire in most leagues. When it comes to wins, you’ll have a difficult time predicting how many you’ll have in the future because of the nature of the statistic. However, you can hedge yourself against a guy like Matt Cain, who will put up terrific statistics in the other categories but will probably lack in wins because his offense is so poor by also taking a pitcher like Chien-Ming Wang who won’t strikeout a lot of batters will be adequate in ERA/WHIP but will surely rack up wins pitching for the Yankees.

When looking for wins, try to find the guy who are going to throw seven innings per start. That will give them the best opportunity to win ball games.
