Mock Draft 2

The second mock draft that MoundTalk.com participated in at CouchManagers is complete. This ten team mock proved an interesting one with some very good picks. Results of the draft in are in round by round and team by team fashion.

My draft went well for me. Definitely better than last time. Alex Rodriguez fell to me at seven and I was able to follow that up with Grady Sizemore and Hanley Ramirez which gave me a nice base in all five offensive categories. Vernon Wells was available in the fourth but I was looking to nab Jimmy Rollins but he was taken immediately before me and even though I had Hanley Ramirez already, Rollins would have been a big addition at my utility spot. I took McCann in the fifth round and though he’s a big compliment to my already dynamic offense, taking Paul Konerko might have been better but McCann was a good bet as insurance for my team average. It wasn’t necessary in the sixth but I took Robinson Cano. I wanted to get Jake Peavy or Chone Figgins but I went for the second baseman anyway. If I made a mistake in the draft this was it.

With my offense in great shape, I couldn’t wait any longer to take some pitching. Ben Sheets was available so I took him right away without hesitation. I followed that up with Takashi Saito and Dontrelle Willis. I got Prince Fielder to help me with some power in the 10th and took Mark Teahen in the 11th to fill my utility role. I took Justin Verlander in the next round and that gave me a pretty good base for my pitching staff. Corey Patterson filled my last offensive spot and will help out with my stolen bases. Taking Cano and McCann really allowed me to make this pick.

I filled my roster with pitchers taking Matt Cain, Dave Bush, Chris Capuano, Akinori Otsuka and Todd Jones. This left me wth a roster of:

C: Brian McCann

1B: Prince Fielder

2B: Robinson Cano

3B: Alex Rodriguez

SS: Hanley Ramirez

OF: Grady Sizemore, Vernon Wells, Corey Patterson

UTIL: Mark Teahen

Starting Pitchers: Ben Sheets, Dontrelle Willis, Matt Cain, Dave Bush, Chris Capuano

Relief Pitchers: Takashi Saito, Akinori Otsuka, Todd Jones

Overall I think my team would be very is very competitive and I drafted well. As for the rest of the drafters:

Jeter was taken too early at #11 as was Adam Dunn with the 16th pick. Joe Mauer was a reach with the 18th. Relief pitching value continued to fall and power was highly valued. Pitchers like Scott Kazmir, Jared Weaver and most of my last pitchers were excellent value picks. Throughout the draft owner “X” was stealing players I wanted to grab just before I got the chance to. Alexis Rios, Chris Young and Erik Bedard all went to him when they were at the top of my queue.

Good draft with some good things to take out. With only 18 rounds it’s difficult to draw some good conclusions from the end rounds but this was a pretty good mock.

  • This draft to me was a trial and error experience, it could of gone better. To start off I did pick jeter early (hence my venting in the chat box). I should of picked either Beltran or Vlad and settled with Rollins who moundtalk was also targeting. What screwed me over was also that I was late on a pick and when your time runs out the CPU automatically picks all of your remaining players(after the 13th round). Explains why I choose taguchi and phillips eventhough I already have Utley at second. I would of picked a 2B late in the draft and could of gotten Bedard instead. I would of also stayed away from Beltre, but Zumaya was somebody I was happy to get.Bottomline it was a good draft for a lot of drafters. But who stands out to me is Boo and X and last but not least moundoftalk. Gotta keep practicing, Both Couchmanagers & Moundtalk are very helpful sites. Late, Mike
